Anti-stress plants

South African society has a habit of chewing certain plants to reduce hunger and improve mood. Plants were so sought after research scientist. What the plants is it?

For hundreds of years, indigenous South African plant chewed called sceletium tortuosum. Society revealed that these plants can reduce stress, hunger, soothe and can improve mood.

This plant is known in South Africa as Kanna, Channa or Kougoed that has been used by San communities to reduce hunger, thirst, fatigue, sedative and hypnotic effects. This plant can be chewed, made into a tea or smoked.

Ben-Erik Van Wyk, a professor of botany and plant biotechnology from the University of Johannesburg said that he has conducted research on these plants and found no adverse effects or dependency of this plant.

"When the plant is chewed, the plant will give a little attack on the head that is similar to the effects of smoking," says Van Wyk, as quoted by FoxNews, Tuesday (05/10/2010).

Van Wyk said, anyone who has been chewing this plant will experience a different sensation and know that something is happening. Often, traditional medicine is despised as old-fashioned and outdated drugs, but these products can be cultivated.

"Products containing these plants can be useful for people who every day have a stress at work, feeling a little anxious with the social, tense or a bad mood," said Nigel Gerickle, research director of HGH Pharmaceuticals.

For that, at this time, investigators were collecting scientific data from these plants, so that later crops can be made pill containing plant extracts and can be sold throughout the world.
But until now these products have not received approval from the Food and Drug Administration, the United States. But this product is expected to be launched in 2011.

Red Dragon Fruit........

Drug efficacy, the dragon tree is not only derived from the fruit alone but from the leaves and fruit leather as well. In addition to delicious, red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) or often called red pitaya also have medicinal properties, among others, as lowering blood sugar levels in diabetics and smooth the skin, while the bark extract of the leaves and fruit can increase the flexibility of blood vessels and inhibit cell growth tumors.

Reduction of Blood Sugar LevelsBy consuming a red dragon fruit (250 grams) each morning and evening for eight consecutive days, will lower blood sugar levels in diabetics. During eating dragon fruit, patients should stop eating rice, because rice is a source of sugar for diabetics.

Skin smoothingAccording to Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yusuf traditional healers China, the dragon fruit is believed Tionghoa culture refine facial skin, which appears more beautiful, but not used to treat deadly diseases like cancer or heart disease. Dragon fruit both to overcome the heat in because it is cool.

Inhibiting Tumor Cell GrowthUsefulness dragon tree, not only lies in the fruit but the leaves and the fruit skin. Rosario Vargas research results from the Laboratorio de Investigation Sols Fitofarmacologia Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana de Xochimilco Mexico, showed that the chloroform extract of the white flesh dragon fruit leaves contain compounds taraxast pentacyclic triterpene-20-ENE-3a-ol and taraxast-12, 20 (30)-Dien -3a-ol. Both compounds were shown to protect rabbits flexibility of blood vessels.Researchers estimate the efficacy of both compounds was almost equal troxerutin one micro vascular protective drug on the market. The drug was beneficial to reduce the risk of rupture of blood vessels.

Test results performed in vitro Wu Li-chen, a researcher Department of Applied Chemistry, National Chi Nan University, showed that the extract of red flesh dragon fruit skin potentially inhibit the growth of B16F10 tumor cells at doses of 25 grams.

Lotus flower mystery

Mystery how the lotus leaf superhidrofob, stay dry, even floating on the water, have been solved by scientists in China. The top of a floating lotus leaf is an example of hydrophobic surface that is already known, that shed water that falls on it, and this principle has been used as a model for technology such as window cleaning itself automatically.

Lotus leaf is covered by a rough surface which has a waxy bumps, which causes water to form clumps and slipped down from the leaves. Now, Lei Jiang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and his colleagues, have discovered why, though floating on the water, no less third part that flows into the leaf.

Electron microscope showed that, near the tip of the leaf, waxy bumps replaced by a smooth surface consisting of the folds and grooves, so as to prevent backflow of water droplets. This means that the leaves are 50% more resistant to immersion than a leaf model that has a smooth surface.

Jiang said,,, like the lotus leaf surface which has become an inspiration to make the surfaces superhidrofob, what was found at the perimeter of this leaf can be used as a model in applications, such as tubes or channels mikrofluida, which require or rejection outflow direction water flow.

Abraham Marmur, a professor of science and technology of water at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, said that "researchers should be rewarded, upon discovery that has opened a new aspect of a lotus leaf."

Cactus Plants.

University of South Florida researchers found the best pure water on the prickly pear cactus. Inhabitants of this desert is very effective in transporting sediment and bacteria from dirty water and the good news of this plant can live in the world.

This is not the first research found that the ability of cactus plants. Mexican community in the 19th century using a cactus as a device for purifying water. Thick layer of resin on the cactus that save water, is a part which is responsible for purifying water.

Researchers then extract the sap and added into the dirty water because of sediment and bacteria.Sediment and bacteria cause the sap to join, then settles on the bottom and separates 98% of bacteria in the water.

Researchers looked at communities in developing countries using a cactus in their daily lives. They used to poach a piece of cactus to get the sap, the sap is then added to the water, just as did the investigators.

However, there are still hurdles to be overcome. Resources need to be prepared to develop the spread of cactus and how to convince the community that has been filtered water is completely free of bacteria.
If some of these problems can be solved, it is cheap and clean water that can reach millions of people who lack these resources.

Chilli

Chilli is one of the basic ingredients for cooking flavor, usually bright red or dark green. If chili is split, then we will find in it a white stalk, which contains substances such as capsaicin is oil and stinging tongue taste cells. These substances lead to a spicy chili and hot on the tongue when we consume them. But this was also the substance that makes people addicted and addiction when eating food.

However, behind the taste sensation of spiciness are countless benefits and nutritional content of us who have not known before. Besides nutritious to increase your appetite also has other benefits for the body.
For example, in the sense of cayenne pepper spiciness remarkable, it contains vitamin C and beta-carotene (provitamin A) is said to be beat content in fruits like mangoes, pineapple, papaya or watermelon. Even according to the study, levels of minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus outperform fresh fish. Actually, among other types of chili peppers, red peppers contain vitamin C, the highest, until doubled.
Beta-carotene content was also, more superior compared with green pepper, nine times greater. Most beta-carotene content of sweet pepper is concentrated in the part near the skin.

The other benefits of chillies which are:

1. The wound healer
If your finger accidentally cut during cooking, in general you will find a red medicine to heal. But even if you have member iodine on the wound, pain / pain remains a strong taste.
Another alternative, which not only prevents infection but also to relieve immediate pain and bleeding, thus speeding up the healing process is chili red. The trick, is dried and then crushed red pepper until smooth.
After that spread on the wounds. Chili powder will not make you sore wounds. On the contrary, chili will quickly stop the pain and bleeding there. This is because the substance capsaicin in red chili, which eliminate pain.

2. High fever reliever
Compared with conventional treatment, overcoming a high fever with chili is an alternative solution that is easy, cheap and fast. But that is not the fruit of chili, but chili leaves.

The trick, first took a handful of cayenne pepper leaves, then mashed until smooth. Add 1 tablespoon salad oil and mix both these ingredients until blended. After the glue mixture on the fontanel, or smeared on the whole body.
Use thick blankets to keep warm. Before long, the agency will issue a sweat, so body heat will rapidly decline.

3. Relieves colds and nasal congestion
Because chillies contain capsaicin which can thin the lenders, so that a clogged mucus in the nasal cavity and the exit will become watery. As a result, the nose becomes blocked again. This also applies to sinusitis and cough up phlegm.

4. Preventing Stroke
Chillies can minimize the risk of stroke, blood vessel obstruction, impotence, and coronary heart disease. Because, by consuming capsaicin blood regularly will keep the crust thin and fat in the blood vessels will not be formed. Thus, blood will flow smoothly. Thus, the chili is also efficacious to reduce the occurrence of blood clots (thrombosis).

5. Alleviate headaches and joint pain
Ever hear her advice if dizziness, eating spicy? Some truth to that advice, because the spicy flavor caused capsaicin can inhibit brain activity, while receiving sinyak pain from central nervous system. Inhibition of these signals travel will reduce the pain that we suffer.
Besides chili also efficacious to relieve migraine

6. Improve appetite
Because capsaicin can stimulate the production of the hormone endorphin, a hormone that is able to evoke feelings of pleasure and happiness. Thus, appetite increased.

7. Lowers cholesterol levels and as a natural antibiotic

8. Contains antioxidants
Which can be used to overcome infertility (infertility), an aphrodisiac, and slow the aging process.

Of all these properties we will get, if consumed in normal amounts, because if not exactly red pepper can cause severe stomach pain for those who consume it ...

Spruce or Pine

Spruce or pine is the tree of the family Pinaceae, we can find anywhere and anytime as long as the region's sandy calcareous soil, plenty of water or that have a fairly high acidity. We can find this tree starting from Siberia, Scotland, Norway, Spain's Canary Islands, the Philippines, arrived to the remote Himalayan mountains of New Zealand, Brazil and Chile.

This tree is famous, because it can live apart everywhere also have a very high selling power in the timber industry. All the pine trees can be used ranging from wood, sap, twigs, seeds until the leaves have economic value or usefulness of this tree really commercial 
Pine tree is one of long-lived trees because it can reach the age of around 100-1000 years, and even record to be the oldest tree in the world, through the pines of the species, Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva), who in 2008 was 4840 years old ! This tree is between 30-80 meters high, but the average height of 15-45 meters. The tallest tree species from the Sugar Pine, while the shortest is Potosi Pinyon pine and Siberian Dwarf Pine

Fungi Bioluminescence

During the rainy season, in some areas in Japan, there is a fungus that can remove the light. Fungi which have names, these fungi bioluminescence, can be issued a green light, because the chemical reaction produced by an enzyme.
This rare phenomenon, scientifically inexplicable yet sufficient, but according to experts, this fungus is believed to remove light to attract insects, so that could spread the spores as a response to survive ......

Caloplaca Obamae

CALIFORNIA - Scientists have discovered a new species of moss. Uniquely, the naming of this moss profiteer last name of U.S. President Barack Obama.
Riverside Museum Head Moss Herbarium, Kerru Knudsen of the University of California, found a new type of lichen is when conducting a survey of plant diversity of algae in the Santa Rosa Island, California in 2007.

"I called it Caloplaca obamae, as my appreciation to the president, because he has supported the world of science," says Knudsen. "When I make a collection of recent research of this moss plants, coinciding with the time last week the Obama campaign in the U.S. Presidential election candidates," he added.
As quoted from Live Science, Friday (4/7/2009), Caloplaca obamae grow on the ground. The current population is nearly extinct because it is threatened by the existence of the farm houses in the Santa Rosa Island, which reached up to 100 land.

"These species can not survive on agricultural land and deer on Santa Rosa Island," says Knudsen. "But with a reduced number of farm houses and deer populations, will help the sustainability of this new species," explains Knudsen.
According to the research, this moss is produced by a fungus and algae living together. There are approximately 17 thousand species of moss around the world, 1,500 species of them are from California. While 300 species of mosses are found in the Santa Rosa Island, this is not surprising, because the moss is apparently native plants that grow in the area.

"The discovery of Caloplaca obamae tells us, that there is a species of lichen and other unique plants at Santa Rosa Island are extinct. The presence of them, probably just have not been known to the world of science, because undefeated by the presence of sheep farming began to flourish in the era of 1850," he concluded .

Buddhist fingers orange

Buddhist fingers orange is one member of the family Rutaceae. This orange has the Latin name Citrus medica, which features exactly the same as orange but there is a difference of this orange, they have the pieces that make up the finger and if the old will change color to yellow.

China people also often use them as room fragrances, for sweets, seasoning mix and others. What is certain is widely used for the drug. Namely, thinly sliced orange and then dried without sunlight and then boiled. Cooking water was later taken to heal stomach ulcers, digestion and colds earlier. Even the buds of leaves and seeds is very effective for deworming disease.

The smallest orchid

The smallest orchid in the world with only 2.1 mm wide, petals transparent and one cell thick. These orchids of the genus Platystele types, most of which are made as miniature plants.
American scientists discovered a super-small flowers that, by coincidence between the sidelines of the roots of plants he had collected from nature reserves in the Andes east of Cerro Candelaria.
He said: "I saw on the sidelines of the roots are small plants which I know is more attractive than other large orchids."
'By considering the interest is often the best way to identify different species of orchids that you observe, and be able to recognize whether you're observing a species not known or not. "
As reported the Daily Mail, this is the discovery of new orchid species to 60 from Dr. Jost in the last ten years.
He worked at the Institute EcoMinga Ecuador, as a provider in partnership with the World Land Trust in England.
"It's nice to be able to find this new species," he said.
'People think all the species have been found but in fact there are many more that must be explored. "
More than 1000 species of orchids have been found in South America in the last 100 years, since a number of new roads have been opened in remote areas.
The discovery of Dr. Jost's most impressive is, a group of 28 species of orchids teagueia genus in the mountainous region near Banos, Ecuador.
The group had previously estimated that only six species. (Erabaru / Daily Mail / voice)

Super Mushroom

The Mexicans seem to have a special secret to maintain a giant mushroom, or maybe just because of good growing conditions of land, or just luck just get this big super mushroom. This fungus is found on a coffee farm in Chiapas, Mexico in June 2007. Two feet in length with a weight of 44 Ponds, this is more big of a boy.
A Mexican biology expert Rene Andrade took this picture on a coffee farm in Mexico also. This makes enthusiasts Czech Republic-home enthusiasts on an expedition to Central American states to do research.
If in Indonesia, can be planted this giant mushroom? Since when can be planted in Indonesia, which has many tropical forests, will add an asset for our country .....

Elysia Chlorotica

Apparently this sea snail's first creature whose body was half the flora, fauna and a half. The reason is that these newly discovered snail can produce pigment chlorophyll like plants. Scientists estimate this cleverly stealing snail genes from the algae they eat so they can produce chlorophyll. With the stolen genes they can photosynthesise, that is the process plants to convert sunlight into energy.
"These animals can make molecules contain energy without eating anything," said Sydney Pierce, an expert in biology from the University of South Florida in Tampa. Pierce has been studying these unique creatures, which have been officially named Elysia chlorotica, over 20 years.
He submitted its latest findings on January 7, 2010, at the annual meeting of the Community Integrative and Comparative Biology in Seattle. This finding was first reported by the journal Science. "This is the first multicellular animals may produce chlorophyll," said Pierce.
These sea slugs live in salt water marshes in New England, Canada. In addition to stealing the gene to produce the green pigment chlorophyll, these animals also stole a small parts of cells called chloroplasts, which are used to perform photosynthesis. Chloroplasts using chlorophyll to convert sunlight into energy, like plants, so these animals do not need to eat to get energy.

"We collect a number of these animals and save them in an aquarium for months," Pierce said, "As long as they are given light for 12 hours a day, they can survive (without meals)."
The investigators used a radioactive tracer to ensure that these snails actually produce chlorophyll, and not a pigment that has been stolen from the alga. In fact, the snails is to integrate genetic material with so perfect that can be derived in the next generation.
The children of the snails that have been stealing the gene itself can also produce chlorophyll, though they can not eat enough photosynthesise before they could steal enough algae to the chloroplast. So far it has not been able to chloroplast their own production. The success of the snails was amazing, and scientists are still uncertain how this animal could choose genes that they need.
"Maybe just the DNA from one species could get into other species, as has been evidenced by this snail species. But the mechanism is still unknown," said Pierce.

Udumbara Flower

Udumbara legendary flower that is believed to grow Buddhists once every 3000 years found growing in the courtyard of the Radio Erabaru, Smiling Hill area, Batam. Small white flowers that grow in water guava tree leaves. This flower can grow in various media, such as leaves, stones, steel, glass, boards, iron, copper and others. (Tianfu Kwok)Flowers are small Udumbara less than 0.5 cm, thinner and more delicate than human hair. (Tianfu Kwok)
3000 years? That is a very long time .....

Nepenthes Attenboroughii

Scientists have discovered a flesh-eating plant so big that it can swallow and devour a whole rat! This new species is called Nepenthes Attenboroughii, it has been named after British nature expert Sir David Attenborugh.

This plant, which is a member of the pitcher family can grow more than 4-foot long. That's actually one of the biggest carnivorous plants discovered yet. Those plants produce big pitchers which are filled with water and they also secrete nectar that attracts insects and rodents. Once those poor creatures fall in, they cannot escape and end up drowning, and then, the acids and enzymes do their job. Generally, only the bones of the prey remain.

Water Lilies/Nymphaea lotus

Most small lotus flower in the world, which is known to have disappeared from their habitats in Africa, was saved from extinction. Experts from the Royal Botanical Gardens Royal Botanical Gardens Kew or Kew, England, are seedling of the lotus flower.Plants are very small - just one centimeter in diameter - known as water lilies that "bloody hot". Latin Name Nymphaea lotus is the smallest thermarum. Flowers that grow in fresh water in the spring.
Lotus flower was first discovered in 1985 in Mashyuza, Rwanda. Two years ago, the interest disappears when the water is there used for agriculture.
Professor Eberhard Fischer, who discovered this species of Nymphaea thermarum sent some specimens to the Bonn Botanic Gardens, a horticultural research center. The seeds were then treated with caution and sent to the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew and was initially grown as other lotus plants, submerged in the water but fail to grow and develop.
But after several trials with various conditions, horticultural experts, Carlos Magdalena, finally solved the mystery of how to make a small lotus, so they can grow.
